(WIP) Research Method (Data Collection tools)

The research will consist of a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches (Mixed Method Approaches), following a responsive evaluation approach. It will consist of the following components, which I intend to gather for analysis:

1. BA Immersive Media and Mixed Reality, Year 3, Final Major Project Element 1 submission

Purpose: Evaluate whether and how inclusive practices were integrated into students’ projects after my intervention.

Type: Quantititive + Qualitative

Method:

  • Document Analysis
  • Using a content analysis with a framework to assess the level of engagement with inclusive practices:
LevelDescriptionExample Indicators
0No mention of inclusivityNo reference to accessibility or representation
1Surface-level awarenessVaguely mentions inclusivity (e.g., “By doing this, it will be accessible.”)
2Applied considerationSpecific inclusive features or representational intent
3Critical integrationInclusion integrated conceptually + technically, supported by research and referencing

I can compare the levels by assessing their Element 1 submissions and referencing last year’s work.

2. Feedback Form (Post element 1 or post week 6) (!!!ADD link to form)

Purpose: Gauge student perception and understanding of learning effectiveness and application of inclusivity.

Type: Mixed

Method:

  • Questionnaire
  • Question that allows descriptive statistics (percentages, satisfaction rate) for closed questions. (e.g. Is the presentation enjoyable? Visual information? Amount? etc)
  • Open responses (e.g., what they found useful, what barriers remained).
  • A more tailored question that helps my content analysis. E.g., Do these contents improve your understanding of inclusive practices and allow a deeper integration into your proposals?

3. Weekly FMP idea sharing Padlet board (Link to Padlet board)

Purpose: Track the evolution of students’ awareness over time (Developmental changes) and topic onboarding.

Type: Qualitative

Method:

  • Document Analysis/ Collaborative Autoethnography
  • A qualitative analysis with a prompt that shifts in language towards Week 5–6. (Awareness -> Address issues -> Terminology -> Potential Solution)
  • Also serves as a post-presentation space for students to respond to prompts related to my presentation.
  • For analysis, I will look for emerging themes (e.g., “accessibility”, “representation”, “ethics”) and how they change in frequency or complexity over the weeks.
  • Potential use of a word frequency map or a short table of recurring terms.

4. Online Collaboration Idea sharing board during the Week 6 session

Purpose: Capture collective understanding of inclusion concepts and foster discussion

Type: Qualitative

Method:

  • Collaborative Autoethnography
  • Thematic and pattern mapping to identify clusters of terms and examples that appear most frequently.
  • Compare before and after contributions to see if the concept expanded after my presentation.
